The briefing
In 2014 I was asked to create the opening trailer for the IBM DACH Partner Conference in Stuttgart. DACH stands for the 3 countries Germany (D), Austria (A) and Switzerland (CH). The conference had approximately 500 attendees and was an important event for the company.
The opening trailer was showcased twice during the conference. Once right at the beginning and a second time as the opening for the keynote presentation of the Managing Director of IBM Germany.

No pressure…
Several things needed to be accounted for. First, creating an opening trailer for the event which presented the theme and featured the main topics IBM and their business partners focused on at the time. And second, the trailer needed to fit seamlessly into the event design while maintaining the IBM brand guidelines. The stakes were high, but I was confident to be up for the task in front of me.
Let’s make a journey
After receiving the brand style guide and necessary assets from my client, I started conceptualizing and creating a detailed storyboard.
My idea was to take the viewer on a visual journey, representing the event. It was important to me to not only showcase the topics as words but to enrich them with icons and pictures that represented them. My goal was to create a multi-layer experience.
So, besides using the assets my client provided me with, I crafted individual ones that would integrate seamlessly in the existing event and brand design.

Success on the first try
My concept and the first storyboard were a success and got approved after minor adjustments. My client was so happy, that after delivering the final product, he hired me right away for more jobs over the next couple of years.
Something extra
I suspected that some of the attendees would be IT specialists. To surprise them I hid a little easter egg in the trailer. I don’t know if any of the attendees actually saw it, but it didn’t take long till someone in my client’s office contacted me to confirm the hidden gimmick.
Can you find it?
